§ The
idea of examining the Quran in the light of modern knowledge was not thought of
by Muslims. It was not until 1976 when a French medical doctor, Maurice Bucaille, published his book, “The Bible, the Qur'an
and Science: The Holy Scriptures Examined in the Light of Modern
Knowledge”, that the idea was adopted by modern scholars of Islam.
§ Some
of the traditional scholars of Islam either rejected the idea or refused to
commit the text of the Quran to the intended scientific facts. They didn’t want
to associate Quran with science because science could change. However, these
scholars admire the interesting language of the Quran when speaking about these
facts and say that the use of such language was unique in the seventh century
Arabia.
§ Almost
all modern scholars of Islam decided to follow this approach and associate the
well-established science with the Quran. The
Commission on Scientific Signs in the Quran and Sunnah was established.
Annual conferences have been organized for new discoveries.
